Job Description

The Design Manager’s role will be overseeing the Design Management function, leading the electrical aspects within the region. This involves maintaining consistency in service levels and quality across different vendors and consultants. Ensure design accuracy, advocating for best practices, and fostering continuous improvement through the design management system.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

Working alongside the Design Director APAC, you will collaborate with global design leads across EMEA and the Americas to maintain design consistency throughout the business, considering regional nuances and deviations.

Coordinating with all APAC D&C team members and other APAC and global teams. Managing and assisting in the RFP processes and appointment of design consultants for all project phases, from development due diligence to handover to Operations. Supporting the appointment of Commissioning Authority consultants in coordination with other design managers and the delivery/construction team.

Managing and supporting the APAC project design review process, aligning it with the company’s operations requirements. Providing specialist electrical support to the Design Director and APAC team. Evaluating and managing the performance of contractors, vendors, and suppliers for each project. Compiling, approving, and checking key design management processes, competencies, and initiatives.

Coordinating design releases, submissions, and approvals with the delivery program, including model reviews and clash detection. Developing and maintaining relationships with design consultants, contractors, and suppliers, with a focus on strengthening the company’s design management performance in areas like BIM and sustainability. Monitoring and ensuring timely MEP-related statutory approvals and permitting activities.

Understanding and managing commercial aspects of design management, including estimates and change control. Driving sustainability initiatives and ensuring sustainability objectives are met throughout projects. Ensuring design solutions align with the company health, safety, environmental, and quality standards, including Safety in Design practices. Managing and auditing the design schedule/programme to identify inconsistencies and discrepancies.

Resolving design-related issues promptly to prevent delays in construction. Providing support and accountability for design and technical due diligence associated with the company’s acquisition program in the APAC region. Collaborating with internal discipline leads to implement site-specific data centre design masterplans.

Incorporating external customer requirements into site designs based on company standard design principles. Ensuring coordination of MEP interfaces between long-lead equipment vendors/supplier works and general/main contractor works to avoid scope gaps.

Education and Experience

The ideal candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Building Services (Electrical). While being a Chartered Professional Engineer (CEng/CP Eng) or similar is preferred, it is not mandatory. A minimum of 10 years of post-qualification experience in highly serviced buildings, demonstrating an understanding of the relationships between primary Mechanical, Electrical, and ICT aspects in construction. Can think out of the box.

Strong working knowledge of other Building Services and ELV design elements is required, with exposure to architectural, civil, and structural works being advantageous. Highly desirable to have knowledge of Data Centers, Wafer Fabrication, Pharmaceutical, or other mission-critical buildings/facilities. Experience in project management on the delivery/contracting side would be beneficial to ensure a better understanding of developer requirements.

Experience and a solid understanding of Green Building & Sustainability certification principles and practices, such as Certified Uptime Institute Tier Designer & Tier Professional, as well as LEED and/or other sustainability certifications. Commercially savvy, capable of supporting the commercial team in identifying opportunities arising from design development and effectively managing change control communications. Must provide insightful analyses of the impact on technically-led decisions and data center costing.

Experience with Design & Construction Management programs/software would be advantageous, preferably with exposure to system implementation and mitigating potential risks to the function. A proficient relationship builder, team player, and effective communicator (both written and verbal). Demonstrated experience in managing working relationships (internal & external) with cross-cultural exposure. Ability to lead technical workshops and meetings with external consultants and vendors.
